The Walking Dead has seen characters come and go, but few have been more loved and mourned than Glenn Rhee.It's not easy to make it through the zombie apocalypse without becoming cold and jaded, but Glenn shines a light with his sweetness and much needed sense of humor, even in some of the darkest of times.

Selfless and brave, he isalways ready to put himself out there for the good of his friends, and he's gotten them out of more than a few close calls. The lovable pizza boy has repeatedly proven his worth to the group,and he stole the fans' hearts just as much as he did Maggie's, all the way up until his tragic end. Rick is trapped in a broken down tank, surrounded by a horde of walkers in the middle of an apocalypse-ravaged Atlanta. Things look grim...and then a friendly voice comes crackling through the tank's radio with Glenn's first lines of the series. Characterized by his playful humor and his willingness to lend a hand, the line breaks the tension of the moment and is a perfect introduction.

Glenn is just as scared as anybody else, but what makes him stand out is that despite that fear, hestill does whatever he can to pull his weight. If that means running through a herd covered in zombie guts, or going on a solo run for supplies, that's what he does.

Armed with a surprisingly keen mind for strategy, Glenn is a steady source of risky but successful plans of action. Even Daryl is impressed.

Even Glenn's selfish moments come from a place oflove. He gets intobad spot with Hershel and Rick, and instead of helping them fight their way out, he panics. He hides. It'a raremoment of cowardice, and even though no one dies, Glenn is wracked with guilt. He admits to Maggie that he hid because he couldn't take the thought of her being heartbroken if something happened to him.

Rick and Glenn stare up helplessly at their only means of escape from the herd of growling, groaning walkers below them - a lengthy, rickety, old ladder. Even in life and death situations, Glenn keeps his optimism and sense of humor as he offers the less than comforting reminder that even if the ladder breaks, at least they'll die from hitting the ground and not from zombie teeth.

Life is rough for everyone, but sometimes it hits the younger ones especially hard. Carl goes through a rebellious phase and acts dangerously and erratically after his mother dies in childbirth.

Enid has an equally difficult time processing all of the pain and death around them. Glenn notices and reaches out to help, gently offering advice on how to honor lost loved ones by staying alive.

One of the most beloved relationships in the television series is the love story between Glenn and Maggie. Though Glenn comes on strong at first with awkward flirtation and romantic gestures, Maggie is hesitant to "make this any more than it is". When she says that she loves him first, it takes Glenn time to process it, but when he says it back, it's a truly sweet and heartfelt moment.

Not much is known about Glenn's family before the apocalypse, and the show implies that he may not be sure they are alive or dead, but he understands loss and the pain that goes with it. Ina whirlwind of anger and exhaustion, Glenn lets him know in no uncertain terms that he doesn't care what happens to Merle. His loyalty is to Maggie.

Where would they be without Glenn's optimism and hope? The world is falling apart a little bit more everyday, and sometimes, the most dangerous partisn't the next shambling herd of zombies, but the other people. Even in the face of all of that, Glenn has a soft heart, and manages to say something kind to a scared, lost girl whois ready to give up.

One of the mostheartbreaking scenes in The Walking Dead history is the brutal execution of Abraham and Glenn. Negan is jovial in the face of the horrific show of violence, and whirls on Glenn with a surprise attack that hits him so hard, it leaves him bleeding and mutilated. Glenn struggles to speak, and despite the villain'staunting, he manages to gasp out dying words to the love of his life.
