The Walking Dead has seen characters come and go, but few have been more loved and mourned than Glenn Rhee.It's not easy to make it through the zombie apocalypse without becoming cold and jaded, but Glenn shines a light with his sweetness and much needed sense of humor, even in some of the darkest of times.

Selfless and brave, he isalways ready to put himself out there for the good of his friends, and he's gotten them out of more than a few close calls. The lovable pizza boy has repeatedly proven his worth to the group,and he stole the fans' hearts just as much as he did Maggie's, all the way up until his tragic end. Rick is trapped in a broken down tank, surrounded by a horde of walkers in the middle of an apocalypse-ravaged Atlanta. Things look grim...and then a friendly voice comes crackling through the tank's radio with Glenn's first lines of the series. Characterized by his playful humor and his willingness to lend a hand, the line breaks the tension of the moment and is a perfect introduction.

Even Glenn's selfish moments come from a place oflove. He gets intobad spot with Hershel and Rick, and instead of helping them fight their way out, he panics. He hides. It'a raremoment of cowardice, and even though no one dies, Glenn is wracked with guilt. He admits to Maggie that he hid because he couldn't take the thought of her being heartbroken if something happened to him.

Enid has an equally difficult time processing all of the pain and death around them. Glenn notices and reaches out to help, gently offering advice on how to honor lost loved ones by staying alive.

One of the most beloved relationships in the television series is the love story between Glenn and Maggie. Though Glenn comes on strong at first with awkward flirtation and romantic gestures, Maggie is hesitant to "make this any more than it is". When she says that she loves him first, it takes Glenn time to process it, but when he says it back, it's a truly sweet and heartfelt moment.

One of the mostheartbreaking scenes in The Walking Dead history is the brutal execution of Abraham and Glenn. Negan is jovial in the face of the horrific show of violence, and whirls on Glenn with a surprise attack that hits him so hard, it leaves him bleeding and mutilated. Glenn struggles to speak, and despite the villain'staunting, he manages to gasp out dying words to the love of his life.
