The weapons and armor in Destiny 2 are divided into different classes that represent their rarity as well as how powerful they are. Destiny 2: Rarity Engram Guide

All of the gear in Destiny 2 can be divided into 5 rarity levels and each of those levels represent how rare the gear is, how widely it is available, and how effective it is over the course of the game.

Destiny 2 allows for a lot of freedom when it comes to playing it so even the less rare weapons can be effective but almost always the exotics are going to be the best ones in the game. Let’s take a look at all the rarities.

Common Engrams

This rarity of gear is, as the name implies, the common gear although after the first few levels in the game you won’t come into contact with this type of gear.

It is the most basic gear that you can get in the game and is only useful for dealing with low-level enemies in the open world or in starter missions. The color of this gear is pure white and the gear can be categorized as the least effective in the game.

You won’t have to deal with commons clogging your inventory because as soon as you get beyond a certain point they just seemingly stop existing.

There used to be a time when they dropped regularly but after the expansions came out there was just no need for these weapons and were thus discontinued from dropping for players.

Uncommon Engrams

Uncommon gear is another one of those rarities that don’t drop after certain levels. They are green in color and are the first upgraded weapons that drop for you as you play through the starting missions.

This type of gear is also very meh and won’t drop for you after the first few levels of playing the game.

The uncommon gear is not worth upgrading because you’ll find better gear almost immediately and it isn’t effective at all so you’re better off just playing until you get gear that is purple or higher.

Rare Engrams

This is the category that most players in the game are fed up with. Rare gear is actually the most common to drop for you because it is the lowest rarity that can still drop.

It is blue in color and is comprised of gear that comes with static rolls. There is a use for this gear, which is to dismantle them in order to get a free glimmer.

The rare weapons drop from chests, completing open-world activities, and playing the PvP modes in the game. You can safely ignore this type of gear unless you’re trying to get all possible weapons in the game.

Legendary Engrams

This rarity of gear is the one that you’re going to be dealing with most of the time because it is actually effective gear that is worth upgrading when you find decent rolls for it.

Legendary gear is divided into two sorts, static rolls, and random rolls. Static rolls are those weapons and armor that drop with predetermined values that are the same for all people that get the gear. The random rolls are those that have random stats and perks.

The random rolls are what you’re going to end up spending most time getting because those weapons and armor are actually good and since they drop with random perks and stats they are going to make or break your build.

If you’ve played at least 2 hours of Destiny 2 then legendary weapons are all you should care about as most of your gear is going to be made up of them.

Exotic Engrams

Exotic gear is one of a kind. That means that in the Destiny universe there is only one of it which means that exotics come with static rolls and perks but those are so good that most of the exotics outshine the legendary gear.

Exotic gear comes in the form of weapons and armor and all of them have certain attributes that can completely change the way you play the game.

There is one caveat with exotics though and that is you can only equip one exotic weapon and armor at a time. That means that most of your gear will be comprised of exotic gear, the rest being replaced by legendary gear.

That means that you’ll be switching around your exotic gear often based on the situation and what role you currently need to fill. That is why it is important to have all of the exotics in the game because you never know when you’ll need that one exotic that you haven’t gotten your hands on yet.

How to Farm Exotic Engrams in Destiny 2

There are multiple ways to get exotics in the game because unlike most games, Destiny 2 actually wants you to have all of the cool weapons so that you can deal with the hardest of activities that it has to throw at you with ease. Here are all the ways that you get exotics in the game:

• Random Drops
• Quest Rewards
• Raids
• Master Nightfalls
• Xur
• Season Pass
• Promotional Activities

Those are all the ways that you can get exotics but there are some of those that are better and more efficient than others. Let’s take a look at those specifically.

Xur

Xur is your best bet at getting an exotic that you don’t already have. Xur is an agent of the Nine and comes around once a week to a new place each time.

He has exotic engrams for sale and is an incredibly easy way to get exotics that you don’t have. The reason for that is Xur always comes on Friday with 3 exotic armor pieces, one exotic weapon, and a fated exotic engram that will always drop an exotic that you don’t have already.

Seeing Xur takes little time and always guarantees an exotic that you don’t have but make sure that you have enough legendary shards because that is what you’ll have to trade in to get exotics.

Make sure to visit him as soon as you can though because he only comes on weekends and leaves on Monday so you’ll have a limited window in order to see him.

Quests

There are certain exotics in the game that you can only get through completing quests. Some of them are amazing like Xenophage and some of them are meh like Sturm. These exotics cannot drop from world activities and the quests have to be completed in order to get them.

To see which exotics can only drop from quests you’ll have to go into your collections and look through the exotics tab. There it’ll tell you which exotics can drop randomly and which you’ll have to complete quests for.

The quests for exotics can be a little difficult to complete on your own so you might want to gather a fireteam or look up a guide for each of the quest exotics as some of them are just plain confusing.

Season Pass

The season pass in Destiny 2 actually contains rewards that you want. It contains resources, weapons, and most importantly exotic engrams. These engrams are also fated and will drop exotics that you don’t already have.

This is a great way to get exotics because you can just complete bounties in order to get your season pass level up and get those sweet sweet rewards.

Raid Exotics

Apart from quest exotics and random drops, there are also raid exotics in the game like Divinity and Lament. These weapons will only drop for you if you do the raid in a certain way.

Some of them require you to complete a challenge or two beforehand, some of them are random drops from raids so you will have to complete raids multiple times, and some of them will require you to complete a quest chain that ends in the raid but begins in the open world.

Farming raid exotics is a hassle as you can only get the rewards for completing raids once per completion per character.

The best way to farm for these is to have multiple characters running at once and completing the raids three times per week as that is the best way to increase your chances of getting the weapon to drop from them.

Promotions

There are times when Bungie sets up promotions that reward you with exotic engrams which you can access through their website. These promotions don’t happen very often so when they do you should take advantage of them as soon as possible.

Random World Drops

This is the most passive way to get engrams. Basically, every enemy in the game has a chance to drop an exotic engram when it dies but that chance is really low so you’ll have to kill a lot of enemies in order to get an exotic engram to drop from them.

People usually end up getting a few exotic engrams this way but there is actually a way to farm for these engrams and it requires you to do a certain part of the Last Wish raid over and over again.

The Last Wish is one of the best raids in the game and it is only elevated because of the farming capabilities that it has. In the second fight that you do against Shuro Chi, you’ll notice that she spawns a number of enemies when the fight starts.

This can be exploited really easily with a void hunter. The way to do this is to use Tether with your hunter and shoot it in the middle of all of the enemies.

This allows you to get a fair number of kills at a time and since every enemy has a chance to drop an exotic engram, you can farm for engrams if you really want all of the exotics.

Keep in mind though as it can be a tedious process because you’ll have to do the fight over and over again in order to get any noticeable results. It also requires you to complete the first phase of the Last Wish which can be a little daunting for new players.

There is another way to farm a lot of enemies and doesn’t require you to get into any raids. If you are familiar with the moon you’ll know that there is an event called the Altar of Sorrows which spawns a bunch of enemies.

It works as a public event so you can keep on doing it and you’ll almost always find other people that are doing it. I prefer this method as it is a lot more fun, gives you rewards at the end of it, and always has other people doing it.

Master Nightfalls

Master-level nightfalls are one of the hardest activities in the game as the recommended power level for these activities is 1280. They require a capable fireteam that has excellent communication but it is worth doing as they have a very high chance of dropping exotics for you.

There are certain things that you need to keep in mind though. The first is that it requires you to kill all of the champions in order to get the best rewards.

The second is that they are incredibly hard and you can get them done at 1260 power level but it is best if you strategize and are the appropriate power level.

As you can see there are multiple ways to get exotics in the game so the best course of action is doing all of them instead of focusing on just one of them.

That way you can get all of the exotics in the game in about a month or two easily. Just be wary of raid exotics though as they are notorious for not dropping.
